What would cause a jeep to shake and backfire when you start the jeep?

My Parents own a 2001 Jeep Cherokee it has a 4.0 leader engine. when they put the keys in the ignition to start the jeep it shakes hard and back fires and then when you shut the key off and restart the jeep its okay. it does it every once in awhile What would cause that?
