St. Petersburg, Florida?

My friends and I are looking to go to St. Petersburg, Florida because I've heard the beaches are amazing. My question is about the crowds. Is St. Petersburg crowded during the summer? If so, when are the crowds not as bad (i.e. end of june, middle of july etc.)? Also attach reference sites if possible. Thank you :)
