Get Familiar? Should I RealEstate Surf?

I'm moving to St. Petersburg Florida to go to college and I want to get to know the area better. What kinds of things did you do or wish you had done before you got to your college town? should i check out the real estate in the area to try and get familiar with the different neighborhoods and parts of town and stuff?
